First Class honours degree in Law, (LLB) Social & Public

Jack is a Court of Protection Visitor appointed by the Lord Chancellor under the public appointments process and is bound by the 7 Principles of Public Life.

Jack’s Law degree was a specialist degree carrying the description “social and public”. The onus of this degree was on public law and family law and was heavily focused on the law of consent, mental capacity, and private client matters. After University Jack went into legal practice where he worked in various areas of family law and wills and probate including for clients with mental capacity issues. Jack has worked for clients with learning difficulties, others subject to section 3 of the MHA and others with dementia.

Between 2013 and 2016 Jack worked for the Office of the Public Guardian initially as a Permanent Court of Protection Visitor and latterly as the senior executive with responsibility for all Court of Protection Visitors and the Court of Protection’s panel of deputies. Jack has in-depth knowledge of the OPG’s approach to assurance visits for both solicitors and public authorities and continues to be involved in law firm compliance with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 including its interplay with the SRA codes.

Between 2016 and 2020 Jack worked for the Law Society of England & Wales where his work included policy matters relating to reforms in solicitor regulation and developments in private client matters (including mental capacity law and the law of succession).

In 2020 Jack returned to Court of Protection work as a visitor under a public appointment where he conducts capacity assessments in OPG investigations, supports lay persons in their deputyships and conducts compliance visits (assurance visits) to law firms and public authorities.
